Mississippi en Conserve a bouge en Caroline du Nord, a Chapel Hill exactement. Cela dit, on n'a toujours pas les accents sur les claviers, signe de l'infame sauvagerie americaine. Les eaux boueuses et polluees de mon cher fleuve, les gamins de Ferriday, la pluie sur le tin roof de ma maison me manquent a en perdre raison. Heureusement, on peut rester sain en Caroline, ils vendent de la Chimay. La ville de Natchez reste toutefois le home de ce blogre et du gars derriere cette page qui tape sur ce foutu clavier sans ces putains d'accents a la con. J'ai pas foutu grand chose sur cette page, certes, mais bon, de temps a autres... Puis il y a de l'archive ephemere a laquelle je tiens. J'va essayer de touiller un tiot peu la sauce pour qu'elle accroche point. A la bonne votre.

Dear friends, chers amis (version française plus bas),

I simply wish to make note of the publication of an extraordinary book on the blues, with accompanying CD and DVD. “Give my poor heart ease: Voices of the Mississippi Blues” is a journey into the heart of Mississippi. The voices, the faces, the gestures of the African-Americans living next to that great river are of a rare beauty. The authenticity of their speech and of their chanting leads us to the mysterious origins of the blues.

William Ferris is a folklorist blessed with an unbelievable talent. The songs on the CD are superb: the Gospel singing of the Chapman Family, the inmates chanting at Parchman Prison, the lively and humorous songs of Scott Dunbar, or the moving voice of James Son Thomas touch us most profoundly with that pervasive pain that they encompass, and by the genuine humanity that they evoke. These stories of this people of the blues so brilliantly captured by William Ferris, as well as the photographs and film of a truly rare quality, offer up to us a most complete experience of a supremely universal music.

The blues is much more than a musical style. It contains the history of a people that was yoked to segregation and to economic and police injustice and violence; it laments the history of a humble people, of men and women kept at the margins of History with a capital H. The blues and gospel are, in fact, flowers of evil, the revenge of beauty against the crime of cruelty. The blues are at the same time the expression of a universal feeling. Shelby “Poppa Jazz” Brown explained that “you can get the blues about a woman, you go to kissing and hug her, and won't see her for three or four night looking for her. You can get the blues there.” No wonder why the blues is a global music…

I do not know how to mask my overwhelming admiration for the quiet and patient man who stands behind this work, a man who dedicated himself to the political struggle for the civil rights of black Americans, a man who knew how to gain their confidence and their friendship. Each interview, each song testifies to William Ferris’s commitment to this world of the blues. I highly recommend to you this treasure of American culture. I have a true passion for the state of Mississippi. Until now, no attempt at documentation has been able to capture so thunderously the beauty of this region.

Je voulais simplement vous signaler la parution d’un livre/CD sur le blues absolument exceptionnel.
« Voices of Mississippi Blues » est un voyage au cœur du Mississippi. Les voix, les visages, les gestes des Africains-Américains vivant près du grand fleuve sont d’une beauté rare. L’authenticité de leurs paroles et de leurs chants nous convient aux origines mystérieuses du blues.
William Ferris est un folkloriste doué d’un talent inouï. Les chansons figurant sur le disque sont superbes : le gospel de la famille Chapman, les chants de prisonniers de la prison de Parchman, les chansons pleines de vie et d’humour de Scott Dunbar ou la voix émouvante de James Son Thomas nous touchent au plus profond par la douleur diffuse qu’ils comprennent, par la riche humanité qu’ils dégagent. Les histoires du peuple du blues capturées avec brio par William Ferris, les photographies et les films d’une rare qualité nous offrent l’expérience la plus complète d’une musique devenue universelle.
Le blues est bien plus qu’un style de musique. Il contient l’histoire d’un peuple soumis à la ségrégation, à la violence économique, policière et carcérale, il contient l’histoire des humbles, des hommes et des femmes maintenus aux marges de l’Histoire avec un(e) grand(e) H. Les blues, les gospels sont des fleurs du mal, une revanche sur la cruauté par le biais de la beauté. Je ne saurais cacher ma vive admiration pour l’homme silencieux et patient derrière ce travail, un homme qui s’est engagé politiquement dans la lutte pour la reconnaissance des droits civils des Noirs américains, un homme qui a su gagner leur confiance et leur amitié. Chaque interview, chaque chanson témoignent de l’implication totale de William Ferris dans le monde du blues.
Je vous recommande vivement l’acquisition de ce trésor de la culture américaine (même si vous ne lisez pas ou peu l’anglais). Le Mississippi est un état pour lequel j’éprouve une vive passion. Jusque là, jamais un document n’avait su capturer avec un tel éclat ce qui fait la beauté de cette région.
